Grow a Lily in your garden

Grow a Lily in your garden

It’s easy to grow a Lily in your garden. With so many varieties to choose from, there is one for everyone! From oriental to tree lilies, martagons to trumpets and hybrids - the choice is vast and very exciting. If you would like to grow a beautiful Lily in your garden, check out the information below to get started.

Know your varieties to grow a Lily in your garden

With so many varieties to pick from, do your research and find out what types there are to decide which ones you like the most and the ones to suit your garden. Asiatic hybrids are particularly easy to grow and adapt a sunny spot in a bed or a pot. Martagon Lilies are happier in the dappled shade, so they are great for the less sunny garden. The tall Trumpet hybrids have big, fragrant flowers that can simply be showstoppers.

Lilies are known to be flashy, fragrant, and elegant

There are many fragrant and flamboyant Lily varieties. Lilium ‘Muscadet’ and ‘Stargazer’ are wonderfully fragrant. ‘Tom Pouce’ has huge colourful flowers that the neighbours will be envious of. Lilium ‘Splendor’ has gorgeous big yellow flowers, and if you grow Lilium auratum, you’ll find it has many sweet fragranced flowers. Tall Tree Lilies aren’t actually trees. They are tall, herbaceous plants that simply look stunning.

Grow a Lily in your garden by getting it off to the best start

Lilies are an easy garden bulb to grow and in well-drained soil work well in borders or pots. Lilies are great to grow to fill in gaps and remember to plant them where you will be able to enjoy the fragrance. Plant the bulbs in the autumn about three times the depth of the bulb size.

Pests and diseases that can be a problem if you grow a Lily in your garden

The primary pest to look out for is the Red Lily Beetle. They can be elusive and prolific, so keep a regular check on plants for the black larvae under the foliage and the bright red beetles that soon disappear when you find them! They are very destructive, and the best way to remove them is to thoroughly wipe off the ‘dung’ and remove the beetles.

So, there is no reason not to grow sunny Lilies in your garden because they will grow on a balcony in pots or a patio and compliment most garden designs as well. Being so easy to grow as well you can plant the bulbs or buy them almost flowering from your local nursery, that way you will see the flowers straight away and the pollinators will love them as much as you.
